My Super Bowl Tradition
“A Big Ass Sandwich”- 3ft sub that lasts less than a week
Chips and dip
Nachos
Chicken wings
Pizza rolls
Potato skins
Deviled Eggs
Potato Salad
… and when the guilt kicks in, fruit and veggie trays.
You would think this was enough for a small village, but in my family of four this is what the menu looks like for Super Bowl Sunday. This is not your typical holiday, but the buffet is treated with the seriousness of a Thanksgiving Dinner. Planed out for weeks, a list is posted on the fridge of the “meal plan” before any thing is even ordered. Thankfully, there is a treadmill in the house because it usually takes about a week of level 10 speed with maximum incline to burn all of the calories that are consumed on this day. We all pay close attention to the game as we all are avid sports fans. Needless to say, this occasion is always looked forward to with great anticipation. I fully intend to carry on this tradition when I start my own family as hanging out enjoying the game, commercials, food and each other have really become a staple in my untraditional family holiday.
Because of the small dynamics of my family, it is difficult for me to relate to Garrison Keillor’s, “A Wobegon Holiday Dinner”. I’ve rarely experienced the big family traditional holiday feast that I see on TV. and hear so much about from friends. I have however gone to my best friend Jason‘s house a couple of times to celebrate Thanksgiving with his family. “Thanksgiving is better when you’re with somebody else’s family and you can enjoy their little fights. Her mother and father sparred constantly, over silly things like money, whereas my parents fought with me and fought for blood, over ultimate truths and matters of faith” (page 228). I found this quote particularly interesting because this seemed to be the case when I was at his house. His family would always be bickering about money, and what was the latest big purchase that somebody made. I thought this was funny because the only reason money would come up in my family would be over how much we should tip the delivery man.

My Space is a Community
My Space is a community. My Space is a social networking website held together by the thousands of members who communicate with each other to stay connected with people you might or might not see everyday. Through messages, comments, and bulletins people interact with their “friends” to stay updated with what is happening in their lives. Direct or broad messages can be posted for people with similar interests to enjoy at their leisure. Meeting new people or reconnecting with old friends is all apart of this dynamic community. On the flip side of this however, bosses, co-workers, parents etc… may use My Space to check into your life and/or lifestyle, so it is very important not to expose any information that you don’t want the rest of the world to know about. The golden rule of “don’t post anything that you don’t want your mom to read” is something that everybody should live by. Like a blog, people may disagree with what you post and this can lead to unwanted criticism, but all in all it really is “a place for friends”.
Like a lot people my age, I have a My Space account. I use this account primarily to keep in contact with friends, including my girlfriend who lives out of the state. I really do not use my account that much and I certainly do not have any risqué material that I wouldn’t want everybody to see. Besides being a place where I can share my thoughts, I have found that my phone bill has lowered because of this alternative way of communicating. Being a part of this community has enabled me to express myself beyond the standard form of communication has made my life a little less complicated.

Whats in my wallet
Unfortunately, I know all to well what it feels like to lose your wallet. About two months ago, somewhere between the Safeway Deli in Arlington and my car in the parking lot, I dropped my wallet out of my coat pocket. I still do not have everything replaced. I realized right away how much I really do depend on everything inside of my wallet. Inside of my new wallet I have: my driver’s license, a blockbuster membership card (I have used this once), my Everett public library card, a cut out discount coupon for 40% off any bedding at Bed, Bath and Beyond store (I always wondered where is the “beyond” section), and the most used thing of course my visa debit card.
Each of these things represent something about myself. The drivers license indicates not only that I can drive but my age, gender, where I live etc… as well. The Blockbuster card would indicate that I like movies, which would be completely accurate. My library card shows that I expand my search of knowledge beyond just everyday interactions and that I am an active part of my community. The discount coupon could be interpreted in a number of ways. I think most people would conclude that I am a little frugal and that I keep a close eye on my assets. Also being that this is a Bed, Bath and Beyond coupon, one might assume that I am in need of a new bedding set (very true).
The fact that there is no money in my wallet would not indicate as much as it would have maybe fifteen years ago I believe. I think that in today’s world it is not that uncommon to not have any cash as you go about your daily activities. Even McDonald’s and other fast food restaurants offer plastic alternatives for paying for your food. In this rush, rush world I think the debit card would tell the least about myself. One could conclude however that I am a neat and clean person in general because there is nothing in my wallet that I do not need. I really do not like any kind of clutter in my life.
I think that if a stranger went through my wallet he or she would not have a very good understanding of me at all. The fact that I did lose my wallet just a short time ago, this person would not realize how important my family is to me because there is not any pictures of them in there. They also would not have any idea how much I love sports. I have nothing in my wallet that indicates that I have any outside interests in this world except that I go to the library and Blockbuster.
